Christmas Parade Brings Community Together

Weaverville is a small mountain town in Western North Carolina with a rich history and a fantastic sense of community. With Christmas just around the corner. The residents and local businesses of Weaverville put on a colorful Christmas parade – reminiscent of the famous parades in New York. But they did it mountain style. A parade of Christmas floats of all conceivable designs drove slowly through the town. Members of the Christmas parade followed on foot dressed for Christmas fun and frolics – tossing Christmas candy for all the children lined up on either side of the streets.

Local Sheriff Kicks Off The Christmas Parade In Style

The local sheriff department began the parade with a slow crawl through the streets of weaverville, sounding their sirens and greeting the folks of the town. At first, one would postulate the local law enforcement to be leading only because of a need for a police presence. That was not the case. They were very much a part of the proceedings, waving to the bystanders and wishing all a merry Christmas.

Following from the first few parade members came Jan Lawrence (Parade Marshal). Jan seemed to be having way too much fun propped up on her little sports coupe pointing to the local town folks and wishing all a merry Christmas with a beaming smile.

Local MC’s Banter With Awful Jokes

Two local business owners, who admittedly made it clear they were not professional MC’s – bantered with each other and the waiting crowd. You could hear them telling terrible Christmas Jokes that you just had to laugh at anyway. The banter flowed as the two MCs described the plethora of floats and businesses who were having fun with the waiting crowd. For a couple who claimed they were not professional, they certainly did a brilliant job of bringing in the festive fun.

Local Businesses Joined Together Tossing Sweet Christmas Parade Treats

As the crowd waited patiently for the parade to begin, you could feel there was a sense of tradition. This parade happened many times before. Young families came prepared with umbrellas, camping chairs and snacks. Kids waiting with excitement for the parade to begin because they knew candy was on route.

One by one the local businesses passed through, each one sporting a different design either on their car’s tucks, horse backs and tractor trailers. Everyone was there, from pest control to dump truck businesses, restaurants, bakers, construction and more. In fact, over 90 floats paraded through the town spreading Christmas cheer that day.

Community Spirits

One thing that cannot be taken away from this sleepy mountain town is that Christmas Spirit arrived. It made its announcement over all the toils and tribulations felt this year in the world. For the short few hours of the parade, there was no air of negativity, no worries about what is going on in the world. The air was filled with Joy, excitement, and a real sense of peace. Music played, banter was heard and everyone was present at the moment with not a care in the world. Such a joy to behold.

Children scrambled to catch as much candy as they could. The children were in fierce competition with the adults, who for the moment, became children themselves sneaking the odd Snickers into their mouths. We saw you folks!!!

Musical Renditions Of Annie

The local Children’s drama group from North Windy Ridge marched behind, with some of them pulled in a trailer. They were serenading the locals, not with Christmas carols but renditions of their musical theme Annie. Be sure to catch them in the local theater.

The parade lasted a few hours and was certainly a wonderful sight to behold. It goes to show that community spirit is alive and well within weaverville and mountain hospitality is a real phenomenon to feel and behold.
