Legal Battle Erupts Over Medium Admittance at Lily Dale Assembly
Lily Dale, NY— Three paid affiliates of the Lily Dale Assembly, Natalie Scobercea, Linda Struble, and Barbara Robinson, recently filed a case in the Mayville Supreme Court. The ladies claim to have been denied the chance to hone their mediumship abilities within Lily Dale because of a dispute about the minimum score required to become a recognized medium.
Becoming A Medium In Lillydale Requires Assessment
To become a medium at Lily Dale, one must complete the application process, participate in an evaluation procedure, and achieve registered status. Despite the complainants' adherence to the application requirements and their identification as spiritualists, Robinson, Struble, and Scobercea faced the disappointment of being denied authorization to work at Lily Dale. This was primarily due to a discrepancy in the evaluation standards utilized in the decision-making process.
The plaintif presented by Joshua Colangelo-Bryan of Dorsey & Whitney LLP in New York City states, "As a result of (Lily Dale's) breach, Robinson, Struble, and Scobercea suffered monetary damages in an amount to be proven at trial, but not limited to foreseeable, natural and probably damages in the form of lost fees that would have been earned by Robinson, Struble, and Scobercea had they been granted the status."
The plaintiffs contend that Lily Dale told them they needed to receive combined evaluations with an 82% passing rate, which includes occasions where an applicant can credibly show their contact with the spiritual realm during reading sessions. Lily Dale revealed that the actual passing percentage was 85%, and as a result, licenses to practice mediumship in Lily Dale were refused to Robinson, Struble, and Scobercea.
Demand For Mediumship Services
They contended that being associated with the organization raises demand for services in the larger region. Thus, the losses they suffered were not only in their business inside Lily Dale but also in opportunities outside the Lily Dale Center. The lawsuit specified that mediums registered with Lily Dale can earn $180 to $500 per hour.
The group claims that in May 2022, they received a membership manual outlining the requirements for potential mediums, which included finishing twenty-five outdoor sessions, taking part in two Monday Night mediumship circles, and sending a $150 non-refundable payment to Lily Dale. It is also required to participate in the Lily Dale Mediums' League and Lily Dale member board.
The membership handbook also lists tests that must be passed with a gross assessment score of 82%. The plaintiffs highlight multiple other documents that mention an aggregate passing score of 82%. In April 2023, Struble, Robinson, and Scobercea received notice that the trio's applications were denied since they failed to secure combined assessment scores of more than 85% despite delivering mediumship services throughout 2022 without payment. Scobercea scored 83.10%, Struble scored 84.2%, and Robinson earned 82.6%. Later in the year, the combined assessments were to be retaken by all three.
The women now assert that the Lily Dale member board has retaliated against them. According to reports, Scobercea was informed in May that seeking legal advice would make it more difficult for her to register as a spiritualist at Lily Dale. According to rumors, a former president of the board even informed Scobercea that the present-day board wanted to revoke Scobercea's and Robinson's memberships, possibly as a first step towards seizing their homes in Lily Dale due to their complaints.
Colangelo-Bryan, in his filing, expressed that "Upon information and belief, correspondence from counsel for Robinson, Struble, and Scobercea that had been sent to the board members (only) was shared at a social gathering to the evident amusement of those present."
